Mint Julep Recipe

Ingredients:
  • 1 quart water
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 2 cups sugar
  • Juice 8 lemons
  • 1 pint claret wine
  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water
  • 1 cup strawberry juice
  • 12 springs fresh mint
Directions:
  • Make syrup by boiling quart of water and sugar twenty minutes.
  • Separate mint in pieces, add to the boiling water, cover, and let stand in warm place five minutes.
  • Strain, and add to syrup; add fruit juices, and cool.
  • Pour into punch-bowl, add claret, and chill with a large piece of ice; dilute with water.
  • Garnish with fresh mint leaves and whole strawberries.




Frothy Hot Chocolate Recipe

Ingredients:
  • 1 quart milk
  • 2 ounces chocolate
  • 2 tablespoons boiling water
  • 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • Pinch salt
Directions:
  • Mix the cornstarch with one-fourth cup of the milk.
  • Put remainder of milk in double boiler.
  • When the milk is scalded, stir in the cornstarch, and cook fifteen minutes. Grate the chocolate, and put it in a small saucepan; add sugar and water, and place the saucepan over hot water.
  • Stir constantly until the mixture is smooth.
  • Add the hot milk, and beat the mixture with an egg beater until frothy.




Hawaiian Punch

(for 4 persons)
Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice, strained
  • 1 cup orange juice, strained
  • 1 cup chopped fresh pineapple
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 5 cups cold water
  • cracked ice
Directions:
  • Boil sugar and hot water for about 2 minutes.
  • Let cool off. Add chopped pineapple, lemon and orange juice.
  • Mix with the cold water.
  • Chill with the cracked ice. Serve.




Pomona Frappe

Ingredients:
  • 11/2 cups sugar
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 quart sweet cider
  • 2 cups orange juice
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice
Directions:
  • Make a syrup by boiling sugar and water twenty minutes.
  • Add cider, orange juice, and lemon juice.
  • Cool, strain, and freeze to a mush.




Mixed Fruit Drink

(for 4 persons)
Ingredients:
  • 2 peaches, peeled, pitted, sliced
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons raspberries, washed, picked
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 4 cups water
  • cracked ice
Directions:
  • Mix all ingredients together, except the cracked ice.
  • Boil for 5 minutes. Strain through flannel bag.
  • Put cracked ice in a bowl.
  • When the filtered juice has cooled off, mix with the ice.
  • Serve in orangeade glasses




Quick Cocoa (Individual)

Ingredients:
  • 2 teaspoons cocoa
  • Few grains salt
  • 1 tablespoon Karo, Red Label
  • Boiling Water
  • Top milk or light cream
Directions:
  • Stir the cocoa, salt and Karo together in a cup
  • Almost fill with boiling water
  • Dilute to taste with top milk or cream.




Cafe Frappe

Ingredients:
  • White 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1/2 cup ground coffee
  • 4 cups boiling water
  • 1 cup sugar
Directions:
  • Beat white of egg slightly, add cold water, and mix with coffee; turn into scalded coffee-pot
  • add boiling water, and let boil one minute
  • place on back of range ten minutes; strain, add sugar, cool, and freeze to a mush
  • then fold in the whip obtained from cream.
  • Serve in frappe glasses, with whipped cream, sweetened and flavored.




Cream Eggnog

Ingredients:
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons cream
  • A little sugar, if desired
Directions:
  • Beat the whites and yolks separately.
  • Add the cream to the yolks.
  • Put most of the beaten white into the glass.
  • Pour the yolk mixture over it so that it will run down around the white.
  • Put the rest of the white on top.
  • If the sugar is used, part of it should be beaten into the white and the rest into the yolk mixture. A little vanilla flavoring may be added to this if desired.




Fast Fruit Shakes

~serves 4
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup plain non-fat yogurt
  • 1/2 cup skim milk
  • 2 medium peaches or nectarines (about 2 cups)
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, or 1 cup frozen unsweetened strawberries, partially thawed
  • 1 banana, sliced
  • 1 tblsp wheat germ (optional)
  • 1 tsp vanilla or almond extract
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon or nutmeg
  • 4 ice cubes
  • Fresh mint sprigs and straw strawberries for garnish.
Directions:
  • In a blender, combine the yogurt, milk, peach or nectarine slices, 1 cup of strawberries, banana, wheat germ, vanilla, and cinnamon. Add the ice cubes.
  • Blend until smooth and foamy, about 30 seconds. If mixture is too thick, add a few more ice cubes and blend until smooth.
  • Pour the mixture into chilled glasses. Garnish with mint sprigs and berries and serve.





Tropical Punch

~serves 8
Ingredients:
  • 6 cups of orange juice
  • 1 cup unsweetened pineapple juice
  • 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 2 tblsp plus 2 tsp of grenadine syrup
  • lime slices, maraschino cherries, and pineapple for garnish
Directions:
  • In a large pitcher, combine orange juice, unsweetened pineapple juice, lime juice, and confectioners' sugar. Mix well, chill completely.
  • Fill 8 tall glasses with crushed ice. Pour fruit punch over ice. Gradually pour grenadine syrup into each glass, dividing evenly, do not stir.
  • Garish glasses to your taste, and serve.
